5 tips to avoid embarrassment in China

5 tips to avoid embarrassment in China

Tip #1:

Know the basic vocabulary of Mandarin, since not all Chinese speak English, so knowing a few phrases can be very useful to be able to defend yourself in China. For instance:

  • Xie Xie is thank you
  • Ní Hao is hello
  • Zai Jian is see you later

Tip #2:

Greet people with a slight bow, as a sign of respect, especially towards older people.

Tip#3:

Do not greet women by kissing (special advice for men) as it is interpreted as a daring of the person.

Tip #4:

When you are handed a business card from a Chinese, receive it with both hands, and if you are giving yours, do so with two hands as well.

Tip #5:

When you receive a business card, learn the person's last name, and don't call them by their first name until you have more confidence.

Extra Tip:

When you get a gift, again, receive it with two hands, however, even if you really want to open it, don't do it until you get home!
