Dragon Boat Festival

The dragon boat festival is a celebration of Chinese origin which is celebrated during the fifth month of the fifth day of the Chinese lunar calendar, this calendar is different from the Gregorian calendar (the most used in the West) so the date of this celebration It varies from year to year, for 2018 this festival is celebrated on June 18.

On this date the death of the Chinese poet Qu Yuan is commemorated, who when being overwhelmed by the problems that affected them (seeing how his country fell into the hands of the troops of the Qin dynasty) and being unable to solve this, he decided Jumping into a river, the locals, realizing what happened, tried to save Qu Yuan's life, rowing in their boats to try to find the poet and thus be able to rescue him, so they also threw rice balls into the river so that the fish they would be eaten by Qu Yuan's body and buy a little time while they found the poet. .

In the end the efforts were in vain and the poet drowned in the river.

To remember the sacrifice made by Qu Yuan, today it is customary to celebrate this Festival with decorated boat races and eat the delicious Chinese tamales which have glutinous rice as a base ingredient and can be found with multiple fillings (vegetarians, pork with mushrooms) this varies from the region where they are prepared.

These tamales are a symbolic representation of the rice balls that were used to try to save the poet.
